TV show9. The American Revolution
Next year marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence, and ahead of that historic event, Ken Burns delivers what promises to be a fresh and stimulating look at the United States’ struggle for independence and the founding of the country. Beyond conventional wisdom and familiar images of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and other Founding Fathers, this history has a broader perspective because it also takes into account the roles of blacks, indigenous people, women, and Loyalists who resisted secession from Britain. Resisting any simplistic glorifying myths, Burns said he and his fellow directors, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt, have created a series that they hope will foster “a more dynamic conversation, one that’s not full of nostalgia, but something a little more complex.” The style is typically Burns’, which means there is a lot of commentary from historians and voice-overs reading from letters and documents of the period. These voices include Paul Giamatti reading the words of John Adams (whom he played memorably in the HBO series). The series lasts for 12 hours, and argues that the American Revolution changed the world in the way it inspired other democracies. From Burns we weren’t expecting anything shorter.
American Revolution premieres November 16 on PBS in the US
Netflix10. Stranger Things
It’s been more than three years since the final episode of the beloved Stranger Things series, but the plot only progressed one year, to 1987, with the start of the fifth and final season. Almost all of the regular cast is here, including Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven, along with Finn Wolfhard, Sadie Sink, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, David Harbor, and Winona Ryder. (Joseph Quinn, as the dead and completely buried Eddie Munson, is among the missing.) And a lot of the usual chaos ensues, including Eleven screaming, things exploding and the army descending on Hawkins, Indiana. The story builds toward its conclusion with these familiar characters determined to find the evil Vecna and stop him from destroying the world. Netflix is taking its time breaking down these final episodes. Four will appear in November, another three on Christmas Day and the last episode ever on New Year’s Eve. Don’t worry. The theatrical prequel, Stranger Things: First Shadow, continues along with endless memes and merchandise.
Stranger Things Season 5 premieres November 26 on Netflix
