8. 181 Fremont The Grand Penthouse, San Francisco

Located more than 700 feet (213 m) above the city, the Grande Penthouse is the tallest private home on the West Coast of the United States. After taking the private elevator from the lobby, one is met with an elegant mid-century inspired foyer.

This is one of the four-bedroom suites, and its side position has views of the San Francisco Bay on both sides. However, the focal point is the walnut corner unit and its built-in TV. “This room shows its penthouse energy by signaling that its dazzling views are of secondary importance here,” says Martin. “At the same time, the chair (which has no back to block the view) is proof that this view is still not to be messed with.”

9. Cape Town Penthouse, South Africa

Located on the coast of Cape Town, this 5,800 sq ft (539 sq m) apartment has a dramatic, panoramic living room without the crowding. “Other than the sunken seating area, there is a significant lack of furniture in this room – it’s a space that doesn’t need to say ‘penthouse’ through the décor as it does through the exceptional location and architecture,” says Martin. According to him, designer Miminat Shodeinde is absolutely fearless here in her use of stone, volume and space.

10. Residence Gallery, Hong Kong

Capturing Hong Kong’s topographical similarity to Brazil, designer Joyce Wang Studio brought mid-century classics from the South American country, fusing them with local wood and plantings. The result is an increased connection between the interiors and the green spaces outside.

“It’s a different approach than other penthouses, and it works,” says Martin.

“This is a room that doesn’t reveal all its secrets at once. Joyce Wang’s use of detailed ceiling materials, varying textures and glass screens creates mystery – and the enticing feeling that there is more here to discover.”
