15% of Americans say they would be willing to work for a manager in artificial intelligence, according to a new poll

Would you replace your manager with a chatbot? A growing number of Americans say yes.

According to a Quinnipiac University poll published Monday, 15% of Americans say they would like a job in which their immediate supervisor is an artificial intelligence program that assigns tasks and sets schedules. Quinnipiac surveyed 1,397 U.S. adults and conducted the survey — which included questions about AI adoption, trust, and career concerns — from March 19-23, 2026.

Of course, the majority of respondents said they wouldn’t be willing to replace their human boss with an AI people manager. But using AI as a supervisor is gaining popularity, even if the person is not directly responsible for directing entire teams of people.

Companies like Workday have launched AI agents that can submit and approve expense reports on behalf of employees. Amazon deployed new AI workflows to replace some middle management responsibilities, laying off thousands of managers in the process. Engineers at Uber even built an AI model for CEO Dara Khosrowshahi to field presentations before meetings with their actual boss.

AI is being used across organizations to replace layers of management in what some are calling “the great compromise.” Soon, we may start to see entire billion-dollar companies with fully automated employees and executives.

Americans are worried about what this means for their job prospects. A majority of Quinnipiac survey respondents — 70% — said they believe advances in artificial intelligence will lead to a decrease in the number of job opportunities for people. Among working Americans, 30% were either very or somewhat concerned that AI specifically will make their jobs obsolete.
