Born and raised in the United States to a British father and Malaysian mother, Atkin competed throughout her career for Great Britain and made her Olympic debut four years ago.

With her sister and family watching at Livigno Snow Park, she delivered an assured performance to kick off her Olympic campaign, wowing the judges with her high tricks atop the 6.7-metre tube.

Canadian Cassie Sharp, the 2018 Olympic champion and silver medalist in 2022, qualified for third place after her first attempt, but she was transported on a stretcher after suffering a severe accident on her second attempt.

By qualifying for the summit, Atkin will qualify for the final on Saturday (18:30 GMT) in the best-of-three competition.

“It’s nerve-wracking, but it’s also nice because you can see what everyone is doing, so you can strategize a little bit,” she added.

“Knowing the judges love my skating gives me confidence, and they are excited to see what I bring to the finals. I am confident and excited.

“The tube is amazing. It’s definitely a steep incline, so it allows for a lot of speed, which is pretty much one of the things I do.”

Heavy snow fell on Livigno all day Thursday, causing the men’s halfpipe qualifier to be postponed.

It will now take place on Friday morning from 09:30 GMT, with Gus Kenworthy and Liam Richards competing for Great Britain.
