Research by Queen’s University Belfast has found that temperatures in 14 of the 16 stadiums that will be used for the 2026 World Cup could exceed dangerous levels during the tournament.

Philadelphia, one of the US cities hosting the matches, was hit with an extreme heat warning during one of Chelsea’s training sessions this summer when temperatures reached 37C but due to the 45% humidity conditions felt more like 45C.

England coach Thomas Tuchel, who qualified for the tournament with two matches remaining, said that it would benefit from starting matches at a later time when temperatures drop.

“Sure, that would definitely help, later on when it’s not as hot and humid. That would definitely help,” James said.

England national team assistant Anthony Barry said England is planning to hold a warm-weather training camp in Florida to help adapt to the tournament, and will also develop a “heat-resistant” game plan.

Asked if FIFA had contacted him for comments after the Club World Cup, James added: “No, I was not asked for my thoughts on kick-off times.

“I’m sure they’ve asked someone. Maybe managers or people at the clubs. I’m sure they’ll get some feedback.”
