Fabio Wardley: Who is Britain’s 11th world heavyweight champion?

Wardley follows in the footsteps of Daniel Dubois, Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, David Haye, Lennox Lewis, Herbie Hyde, Henry Akinwande, Frank Bruno, Michael Bennet and Robert Fitzsimmons as Britons who became world heavyweight champions in the history of the sport.

Of the 11, Wardley becomes the sixth to do so with the WBO belt, and both Fury and Joshua have been among the recent WBO heavyweight champions.

No British boxer has ever won all four major belts at the same time, but three have held three of the four major heavyweight boxing belts simultaneously.

Joshua held the WBO, IBF and WBO belts simultaneously during his two reigns as champion, while Fury also held all three during his first championship.

During Louis II’s reign as champion between 1997 and 2001, he held the WBA, WBC and IBF titles together.

Lewis’s second title reign of four years was the longest of any British heavyweight champion, as he successfully defended the belts nine times.

Four champions, Fury, Hyde, Bennett and Fitzsimmons all lost their belts without successfully defending them.
