📌 Here’s what you’ll learn:
When Wilshere takes charge of Luton for the first time in Saturday’s home game against Mansfield Town, he will face a manager in Nigel Clough, who has been on the pitch on more than 1,300 occasions.
Hatters chief executive Gary Sweet believes this is part of the reason why it was necessary to bring in former Charlton boss Chris Paul to work alongside Wilshere.
He told BBC Three Counties Radio: “Jack went through four stages of the interview, with 16 pairs of eyes looking at him, and they came to the same conclusion. But we really felt we needed a very experienced second-in-command who could create a stabilizing and knowledgeable influence.”
“The model is one that feels right – where we have the energy, the enthusiasm, the different ideas, the agility, the audacity, the courage, all those things – but it’s settled by Chris, who will give a tap on the shoulder and little bits of advice here and there.”
Powell himself had no doubts about accepting the role after learning that Wilshere was the man Luton wanted.
“He’s a young coach, he’s modern, he’s progressive, and – based on the discussions we’ve had – he really gets it,” Powell said.
“Everyone thinks you have an idea of how you want to play, and you do it straight away. No, you have to understand the situation, where the team is, what league you are playing in, what is required.
“Then, over time, you feed in your principles and your concept of what you want to see every time the team plays – he understands that and I think my role will be to help him, support him and facilitate what is needed alongside the other staff.”
