Women’s Nations League: Finn and Zeo return to the Republic of Ireland squad for the play-off

Midfielders Jamie Finn and Jess Zew have been called up to the Republic of Ireland squad for their Women’s Nations League promotion and relegation tie against Belgium later this month, but goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan has been ruled out through injury.

Sunderland player Finn and Zeo, on loan at Bristol City, return to the team for the first time since February and July 2024 respectively.

Finn suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in training ahead of a friendly match against Italy in February 2024 while Zio was recovering from the same injury.

Goalkeeper Katie Keane has earned a second call-up following her recent move to Leicester City and a short loan spell with Sheffield United.

Everton goalkeeper Brosnan is absent due to a knee problem, while defender Megan Connolly (foot), midfielder Lily Ag (knee), and striker Leanne Kiernan (foot) are also on the injured list.

Megan Campbell announced her retirement after playing 57 international matches.

Aston Villa defender Anna Patten has been included in coach Carla Ward’s squad for the matches but will not be available for the first leg due to suspension.

Shamrock Rovers defender Maria Reynolds and Athlone Town striker Kelly Brady will take part in training sessions with the squad at the FA National Training Center after impressive seasons in the Irish Women’s Premier Division.

The Republic of Ireland and Belgium will compete for a place in League A, a move that will improve their standings for the 2027 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

The Belgians are ranked 20th in the FIFA women’s world rankings, seven places ahead of the Irish.

The Republic finished tied on points with Slovenia in the second division, missing out on automatic promotion on goal difference.

The first leg of the play-off will be held at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Friday, October 24, with the return match being held at Den Drieve Stadium in Leuven on Tuesday, October 28.
