This was Scarratt’s only game of the campaign, but she says she feels her contribution on the sidelines and around the camp has been as important as her visible involvement in four previous World Cups.
βI really enjoyed the whole tournament and obviously I’m a rugby player and therefore want to play rugby, but this tournament was a little bit different and my role probably won’t be up front or center,β she said.
βI’ve always tried to be a team player, but for such a long period of my career I’ve always been a starter, so I think it’s very difficult to show that.
βBut it has always been important to me to be able to show the strength of the entire team, no matter what role you play in it.β
After being left out of the tour squad, Scarratt would often carry water bottles for the Red Roses as they closed in on victory.
It played the final in front of 81,885 fans as England beat Canada to win the World Cup again.
βI was very diligent about watching the clock and doing my job, but there was a point about 30 seconds ago when I was on the radio,β she recalled.
βI looked at the coaches’ boxes and probably said some expletives with ‘We’re world champions’.
“That feeling on that field was unbelievable. I never thought I would experience something like this, because I never saw it happen in our match.”
βTo be at home and to be successful in front of so many people β I was so visionary at the end… and maybe also because I knew it would be the end [for me] also.”
In the wake of England’s win, it was reported that R360 β a proposed new world series featuring top players β had contacted England stars to recruit them as shell signings for the inaugural 2026 edition., external
The Rugby Football Union, in coordination with other leading nations, has banned all R360 players from representing their national teams.
βI don’t know if I should be offended, but I definitely wasn’t approached to play in it!β Scarratt said jokingly.
βIt’s probably a bit different for the women’s game than the men’s β we’re constantly looking for investment and financial support.
βIt will be an interesting time as the players decide whether it is international or the lure of potential money [is the right choice for them]. I like to have a place for all of that.β
Scarratt will continue to be involved in the game as an assistant coach for the Loughborough Lightning, is a TV pundit and podcast presenter and works with the RFU on developing young talent.
