📌 Here’s what you’ll learn:
At first, Liverpool appeared to be struggling with the system, and once again their defensive weaknesses were exposed when they were cut down by a sweeping counter-attack from Eintracht Frankfurt in the opener.
Liverpool have now conceded 18 goals in 13 games this season – compared to seven at the same stage last season – while Frankfurt’s strike means the Reds have not kept a clean sheet in their last eight games.
But they have certainly improved in game and system, and in the second half their high-pressing football was particularly impressive.
More importantly, they took advantage of their chances this time by scoring five different players.
“I think this could be a long-term system for Slot, but time will tell,” former Liverpool full-back Stephen Warnock told BBC Sport.
He added: “There will always be small flaws in the new system, and it will not be flawless right away.
“Also away from home, it was difficult to adapt at the beginning of the match, but they quickly took control and were comfortable in their game.
“I actually think Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones were fantastic in the game, on the ball and when Liverpool took the lead, but it’s just about understanding your defensive responsibilities as well.
“They learn as the game goes on. Sometimes you pick up old habits where you go and press, or you leave your position and you think you can run, but you don’t have to because that’s not your job at night…and sometimes it’s just a case of being told again that this is your position, stay where you are.”
While the partnership between Isak and Ekitike only lasted 45 minutes, some viewers are excited at the prospect of them playing more matches together.
“I like it,” former Manchester United striker Andy Cole told BBC Sport. “They are both of a good age, bought for the future.
“I can see them playing like players, because if they do they will end up causing chaos. They both have speed and ability and are ready to take on players.”
Ekitiki’s goal against Frankfurt was his sixth for the Reds, and the striker appears to be the best of all Liverpool’s summer signings.
“I thought Ekitiki was the best player,” former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves told TNT Sports.
“He should be a starter now. He’s everywhere now. He’s a pure player, a beautiful footballer.”
