✅ Key idea:

The semi-automated offside technique was not available during the first half of Brentford’s 2-0 win over West Ham due to… AWS mass outage.

The match started without the equipment, with the Premier League stating that the game would use the technology later in the game if it was able to run successfully.

Before kick-off, the Premier League Match Center posted on

“If necessary, the VAR will use virtual offside lines, as in previous seasons, to determine the offside decision. If SAOT becomes available during the match, it will be implemented when appropriate.”

Deep into first-half stoppage time, Brentford scored a second goal through Igor Thiago, but it was later ruled out for offside.

As SAOT was not available at the time, the check took longer than usual, as the lines had to be drawn by the VAR, as used in previous seasons.

Even though there is no SAOT, the correct decision on offside is still reached.

Before the start of the second half, the Premier League posted on X that the technology would have been used for the remainder of the match, saying: “SAOT is now on for this match.”
