England’s third T20 against New Zealand was washed out by rain in Auckland, giving Harry Brook’s side a 1-0 win.

Only 3.4 surges were possible on either side of the initial outage. With the Black Caps reaching 38-1.

The severe weather affected flights and left thousands of people without power in New Zealand, although most of the disruption occurred south of Auckland.

Brydon Carse had opener Tim Robinson caught on the deep square leg boundary, while Tim Seifert targeted the short Eden Park boundary and hit a six in his 11-ball 23 not out.

Despite repeated attempts to restart the match, the match was called off at 10:10 GMT.

The series, which was preceded by New Zealand hosting Australia in three T20 matches, was scheduled unusually early in New Zealand’s season.

Only 20 runs were possible in the first T20 in Christchurch, an England batting innings that remained for the hosts, before Brook’s side dominated the second match to seal a 65-run win.

The result is Brook’s first overseas series win as England’s white-ball captain. They have won seven out of eight full T20s since he took charge of England’s white-ball teams in April to an encouraging start.

The New Zealand weather has denied Brook more time to fine-tune his team ahead of the T20 World Cup in February, although it is always likely that this series, which starts next month, will be overshadowed by the Ashes side.

England have just three T20 players, against co-hosts Sri Lanka, as of January 30, before starting their World Cup campaign.

A three-match one-day international series against the Black Caps begins on Sunday (01:00 GMT) when Ashes players Joe Root, Ben Duckett, Jofra Archer and Jimmy Smith join the squad.

Archer will miss the first ODI at Mount Maunganui as his workload is managed. Ash continues to appear in large numbers.
