The English Football Association has charged Cardiff City, following allegations that the club’s fans directed homophobic chants against Chelsea.
Premier League side Chelsea beat League One leaders Cardiff 3-1 in the EFL Cup quarter-finals at Cardiff City Stadium on 16 December.
The FA said: βIt is alleged that the club failed to ensure that spectators and/or fans (and anyone purporting to be a supporter) did not use words or behave in an inappropriate, insulting, abusive, indecent or offensive manner including making a reference β whether explicit or implied β to sexual orientation in approximately the second minute.β
The FA added that Cardiff have until Tuesday, February 24 to respond.
Cardiff said in a statement: βCardiff City Football Club has responded to the FA charge in relation to homophobic chants by a minority of individuals during their Carabao Cup match with Chelsea.β
βAs an inclusive club that places itself at the heart of our community, we strongly condemn the language used by the identified individuals and fully support South Wales Policeβs commitment to holding those responsible to account.
βThe behavior of the perpetrators during the match in question was quickly identified. An internal call led to the immediate deployment of police to the section during the match.
βThe club is committed to inclusivity and protecting all fans who attend our matches. Strong and consistent measures were taken before, during and after this match, and this has been highlighted in our response to the Football Association.β
“Any form of discrimination is not tolerated at our club, nor should it ever be in society. Fans are reminded that such behavior is criminal and is dealt with as such whenever it is identified.”
