But Arsenal have had the best defense in the last two seasons and still finish second, so what might be different this time?
Although it is still early days, we look at them not only as having the best defense of the season, but also one of the best defenses of any season in the Premier League.
Their current rate of conceding just 0.38 goals per game means that if they maintained that throughout the entire season, they would concede just 14 goals and break the astonishing record of 15 goals set by Jose Mourinho’s title-winning Chelsea side of 2004-05.
In fact, at their current scoring rate of 1.88 goals per game, Mikel Arteta’s men are on track to almost mirror that impressive side, as they are likely to score 71 goals and concede 14, compared to Chelsea’s tally of 72 and 15 goals.
This means Arsenal have scored two more goals than last season’s 69, but conceded 20 fewer goals than last time’s 34.
Given that the Premier League winners average 84 goals and concede 32 in a 38-game season, their current form would make them one of the most consistent, rather than unstoppable, champions in history.
