Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca believes Marc Guyot’s harsh treatment has changed the young striker for the better after he told him he was unhappy “in every way” with his coaching efforts.
Maresca brought summer signing Liam Delap back into training, albeit not quite ready to return to first-team action after missing out with a hamstring injury.
Delap has been sidelined since August, and it was the blow he received that prompted Chelsea to recall Spaniard Goyo, 19, from his loan at Sunderland after just three games.
Sunderland are the visitors to Stamford Bridge on Saturday and the game comes too soon for Delap, who could return to action against Wolves in the EFL Cup next week.
Chelsea relied on Joao Pedro as its main striker, while Goyo has not yet played in the English Premier League this season, but he played from the first minute and scored against Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday.
“I had a conversation with Mark a couple of weeks ago,” Mariska said. “I told him I didn’t like the way he was training and that he needed to change. He changed and he got the chance.
“He wasn’t training well in every way. I don’t know why, but that’s the way it is sometimes with young kids and you have to go slow with them.”
“Since we’ve been talking, he’s been great and he’s been great and he’s doing very well.”
Guiu appeared as a substitute in two Premier League matches, against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, where his movement helped create space for goals – including Estevao Willian’s late winner against last season’s champions before the international break.
His participation also allowed Joao Pedro to move into the number 10 role, where Maresca believes he “plays better”.
Asked if Goyo could now start his first Premier League match of the season, Maresca said: “Definitely, yes. He’s ready to start.”
