Former Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez has been appointed coach of Greek club Panathinaikos, the 15th club of his coaching career.
The 65-year-old succeeds Christos Kontis, who was sacked by the Athens-based club after a 3-1 Europa League defeat by Feyenoord on Thursday.
The 20-time Greek champions are seventh in the Premier League and have suffered consecutive defeats in the Europa League.
Greek media reported that Benitez had signed a two-year contract worth around four million euros (£3.5m) per year.
Benitez’s last job was at Spanish club Celta Vigo, but he was dismissed in March 2024 after less than nine months in his position.
This was his first managerial role since being sacked by Premier League club Everton in January 2022.
The Spaniard won the 2005 Champions League, 2006 FA Cup with Liverpool and the 2013 Europa League during his temporary spell at Chelsea.
He led Newcastle to promotion from the First Division in the 2016-2017 season, and also managed Valencia, where he won two Spanish League titles and the European Cup, in addition to Inter Milan, Napoli and Real Madrid.
Benítez began his coaching career with Real Madrid’s under-17 team in 1986, where he coached the club’s reserve team – Real Madrid Castilla – and spent a short spell as assistant to Real Madrid’s first team.
He moved to Valladolid in 1995 and had spells at Osasuna, Extremadura, Tenerife and Valencia before joining Liverpool in 2004.
