Rohit Sharma scored his 50th international goal as India thrashed Australia in the third one-day international for a consolation win.

A sustained partnership of 168 between Rohit (121*) and Virat Kohli (74*) took India to their target of 237 with 69 balls in Sydney.

Kohli, who was dismissed without scoring in the first two matches India lost, has overtaken Kumar Sangakkara to become the second-highest run-scorer in the system.

The 36-year-old now has 14,255 runs in ODIs, but has a long way to go to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 18,426.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat, but were bowled out in the 47th over as seamer Harshit Rana took 4-39.

Matt Renshaw top-scored with 56, his maiden ODI half-century after making his debut in the series, while the rest of Australia’s top six made scores between 23 and 41 but failed to get going.

Captain Shubman Gill was the only man down in India’s reply, caught behind Josh Hazlewood for 24, before Kohli and Rohit comfortably led the tourists to victory.

The two teams will now meet in five T20 internationals, the first of which is in Canberra on Wednesday.
