NBA Playoffs: Inspiring Victor Wimpanyama helps San Antonio Spurs reach NBA Finals

Victor Wembanyama scored 22 points as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-103 to reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014, where they will face the New York Knicks.

San Antonio coach Mitch Johnson called on Wambanyama to score more than 20 points after a disappointing performance in Game 5.

An inspiring 28 points from the 22-year-old Frenchman on Friday helped settle the best-of-seven series at 3-3 and salvage his “childhood dream” – which is now within striking distance.

“Winning the Larry O’Brien Award [NBA championship trophy] “It’s a childhood dream, to have a real chance to achieve it, to have a tangible opportunity to win it – it’s the opportunity of a lifetime,” Wimbanyama said after reaching the finals for the first time.

“You never know when it will happen again. But the day we win the title, I speak for myself, it will be an amazing day – the fulfillment of a dream.

“It’s hard to put into words. It’s almost like the meaning of my life.”

Johnson’s team last won the NBA title in 2014, while the Knicks will compete in the Finals for the first time in 27 years.

It will be a rematch of the 1999 NBA Finals, which San Antonio won in five games in the first of five NBA championships.

After scoring 41 points in Game 1 and 33 points in Game 4, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft showed in two crucial games why he is one of the most coveted picks since LeBron James in 2003.

“What I learned is that I can overcome obstacles that I never knew I could reach such a high level,” Wimbanyama added.

“I found the resources within myself. Relentless. I already knew that, but to do it at this level, this is the best basketball being played on the planet right now. And the crazy thing is, I want to do it 15 or 20 more times.”

The NBA Finals series will begin on June 3, with the Final 7 potentially taking place on June 19.
