The Spaniard has been inducted into the League Managers’ Association (LMA) Hall of Fame for reaching the milestone, with former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson saying the longevity in achieving the feat “can never be underestimated”.
On Sunday, Guardiola and City take on a Liverpool side with whom they have established a classic rivalry, with one of the two teams having won the Premier League in each of the past eight seasons.
“I think we pushed Liverpool to be better, and they pushed us to be better for sure,” Guardiola said.
“If I had to pick one competitor to achieve this personal milestone – one I want to share with many, many people – that would be the best.
“Because I have been in this country longer than ever before, the influence of Barcelona in my life as a footballer, footballer and manager was clear, and Bayern was an amazing step as well.”
With 10 losses, the Reds – along with Tottenham – are the team against which Guardiola has suffered the most defeats, and he praised opponents for pushing him to be better, while also paying tribute to former coach Jurgen Klopp.
The German is the coach he has faced the most times in his career (31) and has also beaten Guardiola on the most occasions (11).
He added: “Liverpool, especially with Jurgen, was the biggest competitor in this country.” “To be honest, it couldn’t be better. The universe decides that. It’s good to live it at our best.”
“What happened in Jurgen’s time meant that this was the biggest because maybe after the first season it was the Premier League between us and them.
“I always enjoyed that healthy rivalry. I always had a sense of how much we respected each other. Jurgen gave me a lot and I miss him. He gave me a lot in terms of how much I had to do to try to overcome him.”
