Because the EFL’s profit and sustainability rules are about trying to make sure clubs don’t lose unsustainable amounts of money.
Despite spending lavishly over the summer, paying around £30m to players and having one of the highest net spending ever, Wrexham are well within the financial parameters due to the commercial revenue already brought in thanks to deals with giants such as United Airlines and HP.
In League Two, they had already included more than 20 of the 24 clubs in the tournament.
“Under the PSR rules, you are allowed to lose £39m over three years,” Maguire said. “Looking at their most recent two sets of accounts, Wrexham have lost around £23m – but they have had significant increases in broadcast revenue, from around £1.2m of TV money in League Two to around £12m this season.”
And that’s before taking into account the big jump in sponsorship and commercial income, with chief executive Michael Williamson estimating they are already on par with some top-flight clubs.
“We have a global brand, a Premier League brand in the Championship,” Williamson told Ben Foster’s Foxcast podcast in August 2025.
“What we don’t have is broadcast revenue for Premier League clubs or umbrella payments.
“From a commercial point of view, if you compare us to League One clubs, I’m sure we’ll be among the best and – in terms of just commercial revenues – we’ll probably be ahead of a few Premier League clubs, around four or five I think.”
