A man has been charged over online abuse towards former Celtic boss Peter Lawwell.

Lowell (66 years old) resigned from his position at the end of last December, citing “abuse and threats from some sources,” which “upset and disturbed” his family.

The club’s board have been the subject of fan protests following a disappointing summer transfer window, a Champions League exit, and the fact they are trailing leaders Hearts in the Scottish Premiership.

Police confirmed on Sunday that a man has now been charged in connection with the online communication offense between 14 and 17 December.

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “He has been issued with a recorded police warning.”

Lowell, who became Celtic’s chief executive in 2003 and headed the club for 18 years, was the victim of an arson attack at his home in South Lanarkshire in May 2021, when three cars were set on fire.

He said last month that it was “sadness” that he was ending his three-year term as president.

He said: “I believe I have demonstrated my ability to face and overcome challenges on many fronts, but the abuse and threats from some sources have increased and are now unbearable.”

“They disturbed and disturbed my family.

“At this stage of my life, I don’t need this. I cannot accept this and so I am leaving the club that I have loved my whole life.

“Others can investigate the motives and aims of these critics. I prefer to look back on my Celtic career with deep gratitude and satisfaction.”
