💡 Main takeaway:

Fitbit’s new Gemini-powered health coach, announced in August, is now available as public preview to US Premium subscribers on Android starting tomorrow. It will expand to iOS later this year.

As the AI race heats up, Google is counting on its Gemini AI assistant to help Fitbit stand out from the crowd. Dubbed “Coach,” this feature is designed to be your all-in-one fitness coach, sleep coach, and health and wellness advisor.

At a recent Made by Google event, Google showed off Coach’s various capabilities, such as how you can create a custom routine based on your goals, preferences, and available equipment.

For example, if you want to run longer distances without getting burned out, a coach will create a personalized fitness plan that includes suggestions and achievable goals. As you work out, the app will adjust your workout plan in real-time based on feedback to keep you on track. If you get injured later in the week, the AI will adjust the plan accordingly.

Other capabilities include analyzing your sleep habits and providing insights on how to improve your sleep quality over time.

While the focus will be on Coach, the Fitbit app also features a sleek, easy-to-navigate design, organized around four main tabs: Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health.

Google posted a demo video on its Made by Google YouTube channel explaining each tab. The Today tab, for example, acts as a central hub for the app, highlighting key focus metrics, weekly cardio load data, and any other relevant stats you might want to glance at. You can manually customize which metrics you want to display at any time.

Meanwhile, the Fitness tab contains your workout plans and key metrics, like your cardio goal and average weekly step count. However, keep in mind that many features are still not available, such as nutrition tracking and cycle logging.

Additionally, the Sleep tab lets you track your sleep patterns, with a new feature that provides AI Coach insights to help you improve the quality of your sleep. At the bottom of the tab, Sleep Summary aggregates all the information from your sleep the previous night, such as whether you experienced long periods of being awake during the night.

The Health tab is dedicated to key metrics, providing quick access to vital signs such as breathing rate, blood oxygen saturation, and resting heart rate, providing a comprehensive overview of your health.

To see a preview of Coach on Android, you’ll need an active Fitbit Premium subscription and a compatible Fitbit smartwatch, tracker, or Pixel Watch.
