Two stabbed victims in a knife attack on a train in Cambridgeshire on Saturday evening have been named. The mass stabbing attack resulted in 11 people being injured.
They included Scunthorpe United footballer Jonathan Joshi, 22, and Nottingham Forest fan Stephen Crane, who were traveling on an LNER train from Doncaster to London Kings Cross when they were attacked at around 20:00 GMT.
His club said Mr Joshi underwent surgery after sustaining a bicep injury.
Mr. Crane was hailed as a hero after confronting the train attacker, confronting him face to face in the carriage.
Anthony Williams, 32, was remanded in custody and charged with 10 counts of attempted murder, two counts of possession of a sharp object and one count of actual bodily harm.
Speaking to the BBC on Monday, Crane’s left hand was seen heavily bandaged, and there was still blood in his hair. He is a 32-year-old train passenger accused of attempted murder.
Mr. Crane’s description How he “quarreled” with the man who was screaming at him while hitting him on the head and hand.
He said that at first he saw people running on the train shouting that there was a man with a knife. As people ran to the buffet car, he said he wanted to make sure the passengers were safe.
“I saw him coming towards me – a guy with a backpack and obviously carrying something in there.
“Everyone went to the buffet, and the place was almost full. There was no one else getting in there. I didn’t even bother paying to get in.”
“There are young women and they need to be let in. I confronted this man, because I had to make sure the door was locked and I looked around to save some time.
“But then he started, ‘He pulled this thing out.’ It was a very big blade.
“He went for me and there was an arms struggle with him, and that’s where my hand was, my fingers really bad, four cuts on them, sliced up. Then he picked it up and he must have caught me as I was diving and diving, and he must have caught me on the head.”
Mr Crane says it’s nice to hear people calling him a hero, but he wasn’t the only one.
“It’s nice to hear that. But I would say there are other heroes like the police, the guys who got me off the train, the ambulances, the people in the hospital, they’re probably real heroes.
“And the train guy who was really badly injured. So, you know, calling someone a hero is a big hoot, but it’s nice.”
He says he was determined to confront the attacker to give another passenger time to close the buffet door.
“That door hadn’t closed behind me yet, because I could still see him struggling to close it. So, until I knew it, I didn’t walk away from him.”
