“I couldn’t have asked for a better horse – Joshin gave me a great feeling and I will remember this day forever.
“I just wanted to walk around safely and repay the trust that Kim and Matt had in me.
“I’m really proud to be the first black British female jumper. When I was growing up, I looked up to Khadija Mallah, and I hope other young people now look up to me too and know they can also achieve their dreams.”
Mallah became the first British Muslim woman to win a horse race in Britain when she won the 2019 Magnolia Cup, and she participated in founding the academy.
“I have watched the worker’s progress over the years, and I couldn’t be more excited and proud to see her racing today,” Mallah said.
“Visibility is very important and I am excited to have the opportunity to showcase her talent and hard work.”
Fellow academy co-founder Naomi Lawson said the organization aims to “ensure young people from diverse ethnic communities have the opportunity to shine in the sport”.
“Only about 2-3% of licensed jockeys come from these communities, which is well below the national average, so we hope the operator will be the first of many to reach the ranks and succeed,” she added.
