Sacked Aberdeen coach Jimmy Thelen has been let down by “a lot of people” but has not lost the dressing room at Pittodrie, according to interim boss Peter Levein.

Thielen was sent off on Sunday with the team sitting eighth in the Scottish Premiership and without a win in five matches.

The decision came eight months after he led Aberdeen to win the Scottish Cup for the first time in 35 years, beating Celtic on penalties at Hampden.

Levein previously oversaw the first team following the dismissal of Barry Robson in early 2024 and following a short spell for interim coach Neil Warnock later that year, winning six of their 12 matches.

He will take charge again for Tuesday’s Scottish Premiership trip to Rangers.

“I think a lot of people have collectively done that,” Levine said when asked if the players had let Thielen down.

“I don’t think he lost the changing room.

“The players have to take responsibility. I had a conversation [with them]- Some home facts. It’s sad that Jimmy lost his job, but the games are coming thick and fast and I’ll have to watch them for tomorrow.

“It’s a clean slate and a new start. I will choose the team that I think is good enough to get a result.”
