“Peter has stepped up and led the club on multiple occasions in recent years and gave everything he had when we needed him most,” sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel told the club’s website.

“He has been a wonderful servant and I have no doubt that he will go on to become a manager in his own right.

“While we are naturally disappointed to see Peter leave, changes to the coaching staff are to be expected when a new head coach arrives and he is looking forward to a fresh start.”

Former Aberdeen assistant Tony Docherty, the former Dundee and Ross County manager who has returned to Pittodrie to assist Levein until a permanent appointment can be made, also left last week.

Levein became caretaker manager for the first time following the dismissal of Barry Robson, taking charge for one match before returning to first team coach following the appointment of Neil Warnock as caretaker manager.

He was also in caretaker charge while Aberdeen awaited the permanent appointment of Jamie Thelen and stepped back following the Swede’s exit this season.

In total, Levin has officiated 24 matches, winning nine and losing 10, eight of them this season.
