Aberdeen have signed Nigerian defensive midfielder Afeez Aremu from German club Kaiserslautern.

The 26-year-old, who played for IK Start in Norway and German club St. Pauli before joining Kaiserslautern, has signed a contract with the Dons until 2028.

It is the fifth signing of the winter transfer window by Aberdeen – who do not have a permanent manager – following the arrivals of Lyall Cameron, Liam Morrison, Toyosi Olusanya and Per Christian Bratveit.

“I’m excited to be here. I’ve felt really welcome and I can’t wait to get started,” he told Aberdeen’s website.

“I like new challenges and I think Aberdeen offers that. For me, I’m developing and taking the next step in my career, so it’s a big step.”

“I’m an aggressive player but I have other traits in my game. There’s a lot to play for this season and I want to strengthen the team to help it achieve good things.”

Sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel believes Aremu will bring a physicality that the Dons will benefit from.

“Avez will bring a real physical advantage to the team, which is something I think we were looking for,” he said.

“He is strong, strong and well experienced in the competitive environment in Germany.

“He is also tactically aware, so, with all his athletic qualities, we believe he can adapt well to the intensity of the Scottish game and make a real impact.”
