the next The new LP Angine de Poitrine Volume Two was released on April 3. UK tour in May

In the year 2023, two young men—whose earthly identity is a jealously guarded secret—start a “joke-turned-reality” intending to emulate something like the heart condition of the same name. They grew tired of the imposing aura associated with guitar rock, and began playing what their website describes as “mantra-rock Dada Pythago-Cubist” as Angine de Poitrine. It’s a joke delivered with charming subtlety.

Khn is a virtuoso space guitarist, living out a guitar hero’s absurdist dream with a double lead and bass neck, whose lines are woven together with elaborate live pedals. His face is hidden behind an extremely long nose, while Click by contrast is a “stoic” worker in the drum kit, with a drooping proboscis that looks frustrated. You can see where the Dadaism in their branding comes from, as the duo, playing off each other in polka-dot yin-yang robes, wear handmade papier-mache headdresses that wouldn’t have looked out of place in the original Cabaret Voltaire.

The music matches the weirdness of the costumes. There’s as much metal shredding as you’d expect, but it comes with some real surprises. In Fabink, you can hear the flourishes of subtle tones reminiscent of the harmonics of James “Blood” Ulmer. In Mata Zyklic, things are clearly going on in North Africa. At UTZP there is klezmer in the air. There is occasional singing that sounds like dark Daleks, but there are no really traditional songs. Instead, there are hypnotic riffs and grooves, whose time shifts are all in stunning harmony, making this party music as much as it is prog. Lindsay Irvine

The best new songs of the week

Cruising through it… Jawnino. Photo: Kotaro Hata

Jawnino – Mattress (foot Deer Park)
Best rap song of 2026 so far? Not only does Deer Park contribute guest verse, but a dizzying cloud-rap beat also pulses here, a menacing cumulonimbus illuminated by lightning. Jawnino cruises through it with a perfectly weighted hook. BPT

Olof Dreger – Echo Davnino (with MaMan)
Formerly one half of The Knife, Dreijer continues his pursuit of graceful Technicolor club bands with the announcement of his long-awaited solo debut. Here, Sudanese Arab singer Maman sails over synths that flow like fountains. L.S

Kacey Musgraves – Dry spell
After two disappointing pop albums since 2018’s killer Golden Hour, Musgraves turns things back around beautifully with a lacy two-step about sexual drought. Her dry spell is the beginning of a new purple patch. L.S

The thought of the world started ringing in our ears the moment we reached the beach – say what you will
Exactly the name of the artist – and the song that’s at the top of your debut album. Think David Bowie’s “Heroes” slowed down to stately pop. BPT

Mae Simmons – The Tooth Fairy (with John Roseborough)
Backing this beloved tale sung by the Japanese is a moody, time-shifting bossa nova, about losing a tooth on the subway and then bumping into a friend. Roseboro adds great vocal empathy and doubled guitar. L.S

Bill Orcutt and Maby Frati – about to wake up
Two of The Guardian’s Music Desk’s favorite musicians – American guitarist Orcutt and Guatemalan cellist and singer – create a stunning, evocative string duet. BPT

Sean Solomon – Remember
It’s hard to make soft, light-hearted indie pop like this sound heavy, but Solomon — formerly of the Sub Pop trio Moaning — does it here. He looks back on his life and focuses steadfastly on the good times. BPT
