Airlines have suspended flights to Puerto Vallarta after the cartel leader was killed

US and Canadian airlines have suspended flights to Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara in Mexico after violence erupted in the country following the Mexican army’s killing of a gang leader.

On Sunday, the US State Department asked American citizens to shelter in place, noting “the ongoing security operations and the associated road closures and criminal activities.”

Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines Others canceled trips to Puerto Vallarta, a popular tourist destination on Mexico’s Pacific coast, and to Guadalajara, which is also in the state of Jalisco. Airlines have waived change fees for affected passengers.

Flights to other major airports in the country, such as Mexico City and Cancun, were not affected by the disruptions.

Several Mexican states also canceled schools on Monday after the country’s army killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes. The man known as “El Mencho” led one of Mexico’s fastest-growing criminal networks, which was known for smuggling fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine into the United States and launching brazen attacks against government officials who challenged it, the Associated Press reported.

The Associated Press said he was killed during an exchange of fire in his home state of Jalisco.

Airlines routinely suspend service due to disruptions and infrastructure problems to avoid stranding passengers, crews and aircraft.
