Ajax Amsterdam has announced that it will sack its coach, John Heitinga, less than six months after he joined the club from Liverpool.

Heitinga (41 years old) won only five of the 11 matches he played in the Dutch League with the Amsterdam club, which is eight points behind Feyenoord, the league leaders.

Ajax have lost all four of their Champions League matches this season, including a 3-0 defeat at home to Galatasaray on Wednesday.

Heitinga, a former Everton player, worked as assistant coach to Arne Slott last season when Liverpool won the Premier League.

The former Dutch defender signed a two-year contract with Ajax in late May, returning to the club where he made over 200 appearances before undertaking spells as reserve team coach and interim head coach.

Ajax said Hettinga had been suspended and his contract would be terminated.

“It is a painful decision,” technical director Alex Cross told the club’s website. “We know that it may take some time for a new coach to work with a team that has undergone changes.”

“John has given us that time, but we believe it is better for the club to appoint someone else to lead the team.”

Hettinga’s assistant Marcel Keizer will also be fired, while Kroos has offered to step down but has been encouraged to stay on.

Assistant coach Fred Grimm (60 years old) will temporarily coach Ajax.

According to local media, Ajax are interested in hiring their former manager Erik Ten Hag, who was sacked by Manchester United in October 2024 and lasted just two Bundesliga matches for Bayer Leverkusen before being sacked in September this year.
