📌 Here’s what you’ll learn:

An ACL injury is one of the most horrific injuries in sports, mainly due to its notoriously long recovery period.

The anterior cruciate ligament is a band of connective tissue in the knee joint that can be affected by a player’s sudden change in direction or landing from jumps.

“With the amount of ACL surgery and everything that comes with knee reconstruction, you have to take a long time to allow the muscles to regain their strength and restore your stability,” Worth adds.

“It’s a very important structure, because because it keeps the whole leg stable through the knee, the reconstruction there would realistically take nine to 12 months.

“We often say six to eight months, but often seeing someone get back to their best takes longer than that.”

ACL injuries have historically had a reputation as being “career-ending” for some players, but surgical advances, including donor hamstring and hamstring transplants, now mean that ACL reconstruction is more effective than ever before, and the majority of athletes can eventually return to professional play.

Hamstring injuries are another common injury in soccer, but require less invasive treatment than broken bones or ACL tears.

They can be classified as one (mild strain with a few days of recovery), two (partial tear with a few weeks of recovery) or three (severe or complete tear with months of recovery).

Although a third-degree tear will require specialized care, a hamstring injury is generally less likely to require surgery than a fracture or ACL injury, unless it is an extreme case.

Arsenal’s Kai Havertz has been sidelined since February after having surgery on a badly torn hamstring, but team-mate Bukayo Saka was recently ruled out for just a few weeks.

Orthopedic surgeon Mark Bowditch told BBC Sport: ‘Hamstring injuries can be within the muscle part, known as the myotendinous junction, or in the area of the junction between the tendon and bone.’

He added that most “muscle” hamstring tears can heal on their own without intervention, but can still result in a three- to four-week recovery period even in minor cases.

Hamstring surgery is usually reserved for torn tendon bones.
