Amazon He announced Friday that he is now serving Novo NordiskWegovy weight loss pills through its digital pharmacy.
Novo Nordisk began rolling out an oral version of its injectable obesity drug Wegovy in the U.S. on Monday, offering a first dose to cash-paying patients at $149 a month. Patients with insurance coverage can get birth control pills for up to $25 a month.
The daily pill enters the market with some of the lowest cash prices in the booming field of obesity and diabetes drugs, which has long been dominated by expensive weekly injections from Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly. Its availability on Amazon confirms Novo Nordisk’s strategy to expand beyond traditional channels and reach new patients.
Eligible customers with insurance can pay up to $25 for a one-month supply of the drug, Amazon said. The cash payment option will start at $149 per month.
In the coming weeks, Amazon said it will also offer Wegovy pills through prescription kiosks, located in select One Medical clinics.
The e-commerce giant launched Amazon Pharmacy in 2020 as part of its deeper push into the multi-trillion-dollar US healthcare industry. The service grew out of its acquisition of online pharmacy PillPack for approximately $750 million in 2018. It then purchased primary care clinic One Medical in 2022 for $3.9 billion.
Amazon sought to attract users to its service by offering fast delivery and price transparency. Amazon said it offers same-day prescription delivery to nearly half of American consumers.
The company did not disclose the number of users of Amazon Pharmacy, but analysts estimated that it could generate annual revenue of about $2 billion.
In October, Weight Watchers said it would partner with Amazon Pharmacy to offer weight-loss medications to its members. Amazon Pharmacy also cooperated with Eli Lilly To help deliver certain prescription medications, including the obesity drug Zepbound, purchased through the drugmaker’s direct-to-consumer website.
Following its launch this week, Novo Nordisk’s pills are also available at more than 70,000 US pharmacies such as CVS and Costco, as well as telehealth providers, including Ro, LifeMD, Weight Watchers, GoodRx and Novo Nordisk’s NovoCare Pharmacy.
Patients paying cash will also be able to access the initial dose of the pill for $149 a month on President Donald Trump’s direct-to-consumer website, TrumpRx, under a deal Novo Nordisk struck with his administration in November. The site will also launch in January, although it’s unclear when.
Health experts say oral options could expand access to obesity treatment in the United States, potentially reaching entirely new people who were afraid of needles or thought injections were too dangerous or aggressive for them to start.
Eli Lilly has a competing obesity pill set to receive FDA approval later this year.
