The Berlinale, as the event is called, will highlight new works on screen from 80 countries in its 76th edition, bringing A-list stars and fresh faces to the German capital during its February 12-22 run.
Tricia Tuttle, the US-born director of the Berlin Film Festival and former president of the London Film Festival, has unveiled a diverse selection of 22 images competing for the Golden and Silver Bear awards, which will be awarded by a jury headed by veteran German director Wim Wenders.
Among the contenders is “At the Sea” by acclaimed Hungarian director Kornel Mundrutso, which features six-time Oscar nominee Adams in what Tuttle said was an “absolutely magical” performance as a dancer struggling with sobriety at her family’s home on Cape Cod after a stint in rehab.
Tatum will showcase his dramatic chops in Beth de Araujo’s Josephine, based on a traumatic experience she had as a child witnessing a brutal murder in a San Francisco park. Tatum and British actress Gemma Chan play the young girl’s parents who seek justice for the victim.
Festival favorite Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz’s Rosebush Pruning brings together a cast of stars including Turner, Anderson, Riley Keough, Jamie Bell and Elle Fanning in what Tuttle described as a “twisted thriller” set in a villa in Spain.
A New Dawn is the first solo film by Japanese animator Yoshitoshi Shinomiya, telling the story of a boy who lives in a fireworks factory that is about to close as he tries to unravel the mystery of his father’s disappearance.
French screen legend Juliette Binoche is joining Britain’s Tom Courtenay in US director Lance Hammer’s dementia drama The Sea Queen, in what Tuttle describes as a film that “explores some of the ethical questions that arise around agency and consent”.
Rose’s star came to fame as German actress Sandra Höller, following her acclaimed performances in Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest, a historical picture about a mysterious soldier who arrives in an isolated village at the end of the Thirty Years’ War.
Rupert Grint from the Harry Potter series appears in the dark fantasy story Nightborn by Finnish director Hanna Bergholm.
Charli xcx is set to appear on the red carpet in the “Panorama” sidebar section to introduce The Moment, described as a mockumentary by her music video collaborator Aidan Zamiri about her 2024 No Holds Barred Summer Tour, which co-stars Alexander Skarsgård.
Walters will present his directorial debut “Animole,” a coming-of-age story set in a youth offender detention center, in the festival’s Perspectives section for debut films. The photo shows Teenage co-star Stephen Graham.
“Somehow, our little low-budget indie film ‘Animol’ politely made its way to the Berlin Film Festival,” Walters wrote on Instagram. “The beginning of a beautiful journey for this film – and a new chapter for me as a director. I can’t wait to share it with you.”
The festival previously announced that it will open with “No Good Men” by Shahrbano Sadat, which is described as a romantic comedy set in a television newsroom in Afghanistan on the eve of the Taliban’s return in 2021.
Malaysian Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh will receive an honorary Golden Bear for her lifetime achievement in films such as Everything Everywhere at Once and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
As filmmakers face the ravages of streaming, industry consolidation and Hollywood dominance, Tuttle told reporters she saw the Berlinale in “a battle for this art form that we love so dearly.”
“It’s a fight to keep independent cinemas open, keep the distributors and exhibitors who champion independent films thriving, and make sure they can still take risks,” she said.
She described going to the cinema as “the most powerful way to see an artist’s creativity.”
“But it’s also a really wonderful place, a really important place to sit down with strangers and friends and try to build a strong, communal experience together,” she said. “Now we need more community experiences, not less.”
The Berlinale Film Festival, which was launched during the Cold War as a forum for dialogue between East and West, is ranked with the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals among the best film festivals in Europe.
