Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou was sacked just 17 minutes after the team’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at the City Ground on Saturday.
The Australian’s sacking – 39 days after his appointment on September 9 – means Postecoglou’s spell at Forest is the shortest permanent managerial spell in Premier League history.
Sources told BBC Sport that Forest have made contact with former Everton coach Sean Dyche with a view to replacing Postecoglou, while former Manchester City coach Roberto Mancini is another possible candidate.
Postecoglou failed to win any of the eight matches he played with Forest, drawing two matches and six defeats in all competitions.
Forest collected just one point from Postecoglou’s five Premier League matches, leaving the team one point above the relegation zone in 17th place upon his departure and in the bottom three after the following day’s matches.
A Forest statement read: “Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that following a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect.”
“The club will make no further comment at this time.”
Postecoglou’s crew, including Nick Montgomery, Mile Jedinak and Sergio Raimundo, are also expected to leave.
Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was at the City Ground to witness the defeat to Chelsea but was filmed leaving his seat around the 67th minute.
He did not break the news to Postecoglou, and instead a senior club official told the 60-year-old – although this is not unusual.
Postecoglou then bid farewell to his players, apologizing to them for his lack of success, and that he was unable to do what he was brought in to do.
Many fans headed out when Reece James put Chelsea 3-0 ahead six minutes from time, and there were boos from the home fans after the final whistle.
