Ange Postecoglou: The under-fire Nottingham Forest manager makes an impassioned defense of his legacy

Postecoglou won the Europa League in May – Tottenham’s first title in 17 years and their first European title in 41 years – and explained why he felt the perception of him was wrong.

The former Celtic boss also promised that, if given time, he would continue his record of winning trophies everywhere he has succeeded.

He continued: “I was in meetings and people who were still in this club were present in those meetings, where I was told that winning the title is everything for this football club. This is good.”

“We won the title. We got rid of the ‘Sports’ label.” [promising but always failing to deliver in the end] But all I’ve heard since I finished Spurs is that we finished 17th last year.

“So, if you look at it from the perspective that we finished 17th, then yes, I am a failed coach and lucky to get another chance.

“But again, if I had to explain why we finished 17th, I wouldn’t have to be too in-depth. Just look at the team’s last five or six league games last year and see what you prioritized – who was on the bench and who was playing.”

“Before the last game, against Brighton, the players were celebrating for two days, which I punished because I felt they deserved it.

“So, yeah, we finished 17th. If people think that’s a reflection on me and my training, then again, I think they’re looking at it from the perspective of ‘I’m not a good fit.’

“So, we’ve come to a place now where there’s a different story to tell, maybe I’m not a failed manager who was lucky to get that job, but maybe I’m a manager who if you give them time, the story always ends up the same.

“In all previous clubs, it ends the same way, with me and a cup.”
