📌 Key idea:
Another fire broke out at a Novelis aluminum plant in Oswego, New York, which supplies sheet metal for Ford trucks, including the all-electric F-150 Lightning.
The fourth alarm fire started Thursday morning and has not yet been extinguished. Local news outlet CNY Central was first to report the new fire.
The Novelis plant suffered a major fire in September that halted operations, and Ford said the disruption would likely cost the automaker about $2 billion. Despite a second, smaller fire in October, the aluminum supplier was planning to resume production at the New York facility in December. (Stellantis and Nissan also suffered smaller production hits as a result of the September fire.)
Ford had to curtail production of essentially all of its F-150 trucks after the September fire, as it has used aluminum body panels for years now. The automaker started slowly building those trucks back in October. But it was prioritizing gas and hybrid versions over the F-150 Lightning, which executives are said to be discussing
It’s not clear what impact the new fire will have on Ford’s plans. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Oswego Fire Department and Novelis also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
