Anthony Gordon: Sunderland are ‘not very good’ compared to Newcastle United

The victory for Sunderland, coached by Regis Le Bris, moved them to 11th in the Premier League on 43 points – one point and a place above Newcastle – after 31 games.

The Black Cats have won 11, drawn 10 and lost 10 matches in League One, while the Magpies have won 12, drawn six and lost 13 times.

Newcastle have scored 44 goals and conceded 45 compared to their rivals who have scored 32 and allowed 36, while the Tyneside club, according to Opta, have an xG (expected goals) score of 46.7 ahead of Sunderland’s 30.3.

St James’ Park had more shots – 409 to Sunderland’s 306 – but had a similar shot conversion rate, with Newcastle at 10.8% and the Black Cats at 10.5%.

Sunderland have kept nine clean sheets, one more than Newcastle, while Howe’s side have an average of 52.9% when it comes to possession while the Wearsiders average 43.6%.

Sunderland’s win on Sunday means they have gained 19 points from a losing position, while Newcastle have scored just three on the same scale, and the Magpies have dropped 22 points from winning positions compared to Le Press’s eight.
