The driver who was driving Anthony Joshua when their car crashed, killing two of the boxer’s friends, has appeared in court in Nigeria.

Adeniyi Kayode, 46, had previously been charged with four offences, including death by dangerous driving.

Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Gami, died on December 29 after their car collided with a stationary truck near Lagos. Joshua was treated in hospital for his injuries.

Kayode arrived at a Sagamu court in Ogun State on Tuesday, but the case was adjourned until February 25 after the prosecutor was given more time to seek legal advice.

Kayode faced court wearing a black jacket, black shoes and black pants. He did not speak during the session.

He was previously released from custody after being granted bail of 5 million naira ($3,500; £2,600).

Joshua, the former heavyweight champion, was released from hospital two days after the Lexus SUV crashed on the busy Lagos-Ibadan highway, in southwestern Nigeria.

Gami and Ayodele were pronounced dead at the scene, while 36-year-old Joshua was photographed receiving help from the wreckage.

After the incident, the boxer posted a tribute to Gami and Ayodele on Instagram, writing: “I didn’t even realize how special they were.

“I will walk with them and tell jokes with them, without even knowing that God has kept me in the presence of great men.

“It’s 100 percent hard for me, but I know it’s harder for their parents.”

Born in Watford, Joshua has family roots in Sagamu, a town in Ogun State, near the site of the accident.

A family member told the BBC that he was on his way to visit his relatives to celebrate the New Year in the town at the time of the accident.

Kayode was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, rash and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driving licence.
