Anthony Joshua’s driver has been charged after an accident in Nigeria that left the boxer injured and two of his team members killed, police said.

On Friday, Adeni Mobolaji Kayode (46 years old) was charged in a Sagamu court. Police sources told the BBC that the charges included causing death by dangerous driving.

Joshua’s personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength coach Sina Gami died on Monday after the car they were traveling in collided with a stationary truck on a highway in Ogun State near Lagos.

The former heavyweight champion was taken to hospital for his injuries after the accident and was released from the hospital on Wednesday.

A police source told the BBC that the prosecution brought four charges against Kayode, namely causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driving licence.

The defendant was granted bail in the sum of 5,000,000 naira (£2,578) and was remanded in custody until his bail conditions were met.

The case was postponed until next January 20.

Joshua, 36, was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a parked truck on the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway, in southwestern Nigeria, on Monday.

Mr Gami and Mr Ayodele were pronounced dead at the scene, while Joshua was photographed being helped from the wreckage.

Officials in Ogun and Lagos states said in a statement that the British boxer was “deeply saddened” by the death of the two men who were his close friends.

The statement added that after his release from hospital, Joshua visited the funeral home where “their bodies are being prepared for repatriation.”

A few hours before the incident, Joshua posted a video on Instagram playing table tennis with Mr Ayodele.

On Monday, Eddie Hearn, who has been Joshua’s promoter for more than a decade, paid tribute to the team members.

Hearn posted on Instagram: “Rest in peace Latz and Cena.”

“We will greatly miss your energy and loyalty among many other great qualities. We pray for strength and guidance for all their family, friends and of course AJ during this very difficult time.”

Born in Watford, Joshua has family roots in Sagamu, a town in Ogun State, near the site of the accident.

A family member told the BBC that he was on his way to visit his relatives to celebrate the New Year in the town at the time of the accident.

The boxer has been spending some time in Nigeria following his recent win over American YouTuber-turned-boxer, Jake Paul, on December 19.

“Life is so much more important than boxing. Praying for the lives lost, AJ and anyone affected by today’s unfortunate accident,” Paul posted on X after the incident.
