“Yes guys, it will be difficult in the future to ensure that OpenClaw continues to work with Anthropic models,” OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger posted on X early Friday morning, alongside an image of a message from Anthropic stating that his account had been suspended due to “suspicious” activity.
The ban did not last long. A few hours later, after the post went viral, Steinberger said his account had been reinstated. Among the hundreds of comments — many of them conspiracy theoretic, given that Steinberger now works at Anthropologie’s competitor OpenAI — was one of Anthropologie’s engineers. The engineer told the popular developer that Anthropic has never banned anyone from using OpenClaw and offered to help.
It is not clear if this is the key that restored the calculation. (We asked the Anthropists about this.) But the entire thread was helpful on many levels.
To recap the recent history: This ban follows news last week that subscriptions to Anthropic’s Claude will no longer cover “third-party tools including OpenClaw,” the AI modeling company said.
OpenClaw users now have to pay for this usage separately, based on consumption, through the Claude API. In essence, Anthropic, which offers its own proxy Cowork, is now charging a “clutch tax.” Steinberger said he was following this new rule and using his API, but was banned anyway.
Anthropic said it changed prices because the subscriptions were not designed to handle claws’ “usage patterns.” Claws can be more computationally intensive than prompts or simple scripts because they may run continuous thought loops, automatically repeat or retry tasks, and link to a lot of other third-party tools.
But Steinberger was not convinced by this excuse. After Anthropic changed pricing, he posted: “Funny how the timings coincide, first they copy some popular features into their closed tools, then they close open source.” Although he did not specify this, he may have been referring to features added to the Claude Cowork agent, such as Claude Dispatch, which allows users to control agents remotely and assign tasks. Dispatch was released two weeks before Anthropic changed its OpenClaw pricing policy.
Steinberger’s frustration with Anthropy was on display again Friday.
One person implied that some of this was on him because he got a job at OpenAI instead of Anthropic, posting: “You had the choice, but you went to the wrong one.” “One welcomed me and another sent legal threats,” Steinberger replied.
Oh.
When several people asked him why he used Claude instead of Employer Forms at all, he explained that he only used it for testing, to make sure that OpenClaw updates wouldn’t break things for Claude’s users.
“You need to separate two things,” he explained. “My job is at the OpenClaw Foundation where we want to make OpenClaw work great with *any* model provider, and my job is at OpenAI to help them with future product strategy.”
Many people also pointed out that the need to test Claude is because this model remains a popular choice for OpenClaw users over ChatGPT. He also heard that when Anthropic changed its prices, he replied, “We are working on it.” (So, here’s a clue to what his job at OpenAI entails.)
Steinberger did not respond to a request for comment.
