The result in Napoli could be hugely significant for Rosenior whose appointment in place of Enzo Maresca was not welcomed with open arms.

Rosenior’s lack of elite experience – having moved from sister club Strasbourg after spells with Derby County and Hull City in the Championship – saw some dub him the ‘yes man’.

He also faced the wrath of fans who shouted anti-royalty chants questioning BlueCo’s ambition.

Rosenior has insisted from the start that his response must be results.

He has achieved an impressive run of results in his opening weeks with five wins in six matches and the latest over the former Chelsea favorite should earn him the trust of more supporters.

“These players have lost a manager they really respected for reasons beyond my control or knowledge,” Rosenior told TNT Sports.

“So when you go through that as a young group, for the new manager to accept the way they did and work as hard as they did is a credit to them.

“It’s not about me or my ego or trying to prove anything. I’m trying to do my best with my group and with my crew, and I hope we can have more and more good nights like this.”

Rosenior’s introduction of Cole Palmer in the first half assisted both of Joao Pedro’s goals while Trevo Chalupa added defensive solidity after coming on later in the first half as the Blues restricted Napoli to one shot on target after the break.

The Chelsea coach added: “I am learning all the time about my team and what we are capable of.

“I really wanted to be on top today. I wanted to go out and win the game.”

His momentum was rewarded with a win that helped Chelsea avoid adding a two-legged play-off to their already busy schedule.

“It’s huge, it’s huge for us to be able to work with the guys on the training tour,” Rosenior said.

Greater challenges await Rosenior and his young squad as they enter the final stretch of the competition, but the London-born coach is optimistic.

“You have to enjoy this job,” he said.

“We are the luckiest people in the world to do this job. You have to enjoy these moments, but we want more.

“You are in the Champions League, so at the end of the day you have to play against the best and beat the best.”
