✅ Main takeaway:

Apple has introduced a new feature that makes it easier to customize Liquid Glass to your liking. Now, users will be able to set the appearance of Liquid Glass to either Clear or Tinted, with the help of a new setting included in the latest beta update for mobile and desktop operating systems.

The addition indicates that Apple is listening closely to user feedback in these first days of the public launch of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26. Apple likes to make more significant changes, but often offers a fallback option for those who have difficulty adapting.

This was the case when Apple moved the Safari heading to the bottom of the screen in 2021. After backlash from some users to the then-controversial decision, the iPhone maker added an option to move the bar back to the top of the screen. (We’ll admit that Apple was right to make this move; the Strip’s location is best when it’s within easy reach.)

Now, Apple is taking a similar approach with Liquid Glass.

The new UI that shipped with iOS 26 and Apple’s other operating systems marked the company’s biggest design overhaul since it moved from flat to flat design in 2013. As with most changes of this magnitude and significance, not everyone was on board.

Some have said that the Liquid Glass design makes reading various parts of the interface more difficult, including notifications or navigation controls in apps like Apple Music and others. Others said they liked Liquid Glass’s attention to detail and its new look, which felt like a more modern update to an interface that had grown dated over the years.

With another potential response to the controversy on its hands, Apple is now ceding some control over the appearance of Liquid Glass to users.

The new feature, which was first spotted by 9to5Mac, has arrived in the fourth beta of iOS 26.1 and accompanying updates for tablets and desktop computers.

When reached for comment, Apple told TechCrunch that during the beta period this summer, it heard from some users who wanted the option to set a more opaque appearance for liquid glass. This new setting that lets users customize Liquid Glass is available in iOS 26.1, iPadOS 26.1, and macOS 26.1.

To access this feature, beta users can visit the ‘Display & Brightness’ menu under Settings to find the added Liquid Glass menu option. On a Mac, it’s under Appearance in System Settings. The control lets you choose between two options, Clear and Tinted. The latter increases the opacity of interface elements, making them easier to see.

Although some users have been advocating for a slider that would let them control opacity more precisely, Apple has opted for a toggle switch where it determines the two tint levels users can choose from. This makes it easier for third-party developers to test how their apps look under different settings.

Apple told TechCrunch that any developer who has already implemented Liquid Glass in their apps will have the user preferences automatically applied to them. Developers can test this now in 26.1 developer beta.

After selecting their preferred option, users will see changes across UI elements, such as running controls, notifications on the lock screen, in Apple apps, and those provided by third-party developers.

While the beta feature arrives to developers today, the public beta should arrive over the next few days before the broader public release.
