Apple’s new Studio monitors come with Thunderbolt 5

Apple on Tuesday announced a new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, both powered by its latest chips, as well as a new family of displays. The latter includes a new $1,599 Studio Display and a $3,299 Studio Display XDR.

The new 27-inch monitors come with better cameras and improved connectivity.

Both displays feature a 12-megapixel central camera, which the company says provides improved image quality. There’s also support for Desk View, a feature that shows your face and an overhead view of your desk at the same time.

The 5K Retina Studio Display has more than 14 million pixels, 600 nits of brightness, and supports the P3 wide color standard, which covers a wider range of the visible color spectrum than standards like sRGB.

The displays come with Thunderbolt 5 ports, so they can be connected to accessories and used to daisy-chain up to four displays (Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable included). There’s also a three-microphone array and a six-speaker sound system with spatial audio. Apple says the new audio system delivers 30% deeper sound than the last generation.

The cutting-edge Studio Display XDR features a 5K Retina It can reach 1,000 nits of SDR peak brightness and 2,000 nits of HDR peak brightness, and has a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. It also supports the Adobe RGB color standard.

The monitor features a 120Hz refresh rate, supports Adaptive Sync, and comes with DICOM medical presets and medical imaging calibrators, making it usable in medical settings. Apple says medical imaging calibration on macOS is pending FDA approval and is expected to be available soon in the US

Although the Studio Display stand is adjustable and tiltable, Display XDR also lets you adjust the height.

Apple notes that both came in either standard or nano-textured glass options.

Pre-orders begin March 4, and displays will be available starting March 11.
