When O’Neill took charge of Celtic on an interim basis last month, he entered a club plagued by internal division, highlighted by the acrimonious nature of Brendan Rodgers’ exit.

Hearts beat Celtic 3-1 at Tynecastle to take an eight-point lead, with the 73-year-old parachuting in to steady the ship.

Although Midtjylland comprehensively outplayed them on Thursday, O’Neill performed well domestically, winning all three of his matches, closing the gap in the league and reaching the Premier League Cup final at Rangers’ expense.

Celtic’s attack was liberated under the leadership of the Northern Irishman, as he scored 11 goals in those matches.

The champions have managed just 10 goals in their last seven home games under Rodgers, four of which came in the League Cup win over Partick Thistle.

O’Neill praised the nature of Celtic’s 4-0 win over Kilmarnock on Sunday, but stressed they still have a lot of work to do if they are to defend their title.

“There were some parts of the performance that I was quite happy with,” he said. “We defended hard.

“You need help when you’re chasing someone, but there’s a long way to go.”

As for his future, O’Neill has continued to offer nothing, claiming he does not know if he will be taking charge of St Mirren in a fortnight’s time.

If the win over Kilmarnock proves to be the final game of his second spell with the club, he says he will gladly accept it.

He said: “I will take some time during the international break. Most of our players will be off the field, and there will be time for internal reflection.”

“It’s been a whirlwind two weeks, I can’t believe this has actually happened.

“I really don’t know [if I’ll be back in two weeks]. If the board makes its decision, it’s okay for me.”
