Regarded as the greatest pole vaulter of all time, Duplantis has already won every major gold medal available to him, and also holds the most clears in history from six metres.

The two-time Olympic champion has won the last eight men’s pole vault gold medals at the world level in indoor and outdoor competitions.

Duplantis’ latest victory in Japan extended his unbeaten streak to 37 contests, a streak of dominance that extends to July 2023.

He did so in front of a dazzled crowd in Tokyo, who stayed in the stadium long after the other events that night had concluded to watch his final world-record performance.

The BBC’s World Sports Star of the Year was chosen in a public vote.

American athlete Sydney McLaughlin Levrone, Spanish footballer Mariona Caldente, American boxer Terence Crawford, Japanese baseball star Shohei Ohtani and Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah were the other contenders on the shortlist.

In winning last year’s award, Duplantis was chosen over American gymnast Simone Biles, American basketball player Caitlin Clark, Swiss wheelchair racer Catherine DeBrunner, Dutch athlete Sifan Hassan, and French swimmer Leon Marchand.
