In response to his definition of an “acceptable” season, Slott said: “When you’re at Liverpool, the goal is to win the league. We’ve only done that twice in the last 30 years. The goal is to be competitive in every competition we participate in.”

“That’s always the goal, but the reality is that in the last three years we’ve won the League Cup once and the Premier League once.

“What’s acceptable? I have my opinion but I won’t share it.”

“The outside world has a say. As we all know, a lot has been said about the £450m figure [that Liverpool spent in the summer]But people tend to forget the £300m we bought.”

Liverpool occupies sixth place in the English Premier League and has not won any of its past five matches (D4, L1) in the competition.

“I think it’s going to be really hard to quiet the outside noise given the position we’re in in the league,” Slott said. “So, even if we win some games, every loss or every disappointing result will bring the noise back again.

“That’s what you can expect if you start the season like we started – we didn’t start, but at a certain moment with a lot of losses. So it’s impossible to silence the noise at a club like this if you’re not competing for the league.”

The Liverpool coach expects a difficult challenge against the Karabakh team, which tied with Chelsea earlier in the season.

Liverpool ranks fourth in the group stage and enters the final round of matches, with the top eight automatically qualifying for the round of 16.

Defeat could knock them out of the Group of Eight, so Slott wants to convince his players that they should be wary of the threat from Karabakh. The Anfield visitors are ranked 18th in the 36-team league table.

“The players are the ones who always make things difficult. They are very direct and fast players,” Slott said of the opponent.

“They go directly and quickly towards goal and they have players who are comfortable with the ball. They showed against the big clubs that they are a very good team. Even Chelsea, they managed to keep the score at 2-2.”

“If you look at the Champions League this season, some clubs are lucky to play against teams that are outside and in the bottom 10. We have only played once. [Eintracht Frankfurt]. “We played really well, but it might have caused us some problems in the league game or a couple of games later.”
