There was a period at the start of the second half when it seemed like a matter of time before Liverpool added the second goal after Florian Wirtz’s first-half goal.

From the Kop came the famous chant, “A team that plays the Liverpool way.”

It wasn’t top-heavy football, but after weeks of struggling to break down low blocks, Liverpool were playing with some extra momentum and getting in behind the Burnley backline.

Wirtz came close to scoring again before Cody Jacobo cleared a shot off the goal line, but suddenly Burnley succeeded in equalizing through Marcus Edwards to silence Anfield.

“I can’t say we stopped playing but we failed to get the ball out of the backfield,” Slott said. “That’s part of football. It sums up a big part of our season and today was another example of that.”

In hindsight, had Dominik Szoboszlai converted his first-half penalty, this game could have ended differently, but regardless of that miss, Liverpool should have settled the matter before Burnley equalised.

“It’s not the first time. It’s usually frustrating,” Slott said. “They come in different ways. Sometimes we score a goal in stoppage time and you expect to win the game and then you concede another goal in stoppage time.

“But yes, in football, one team can have two chances – one of which was almost an own goal – and score one goal while the other team can have several chances and only score one goal as well.”

They have now gone 12 games unbeaten, but the bad thing for Liverpool is that in this run of four consecutive league draws, they should have won at least three.

Aside from the draw with Arsenal, they dropped points at home to Leeds and Burnley and were unable to maintain their lead over Fulham despite scoring in the 94th minute.

Those six additional points alone would have raised Liverpool’s tally to 42 points, seven points behind Manchester United in fifth place and one point behind Manchester City and Aston Villa in second and third place.

“We gave up a lot of points when we didn’t deserve it, and we barely got a point when we deserved less,” Slott said. “The only one responsible is ourselves.”

At the very least, Liverpool can look forward to the return of striker Mohamed Salah in the coming days.

Salah also missed a penalty kick in the penalty shootout during the third-place match against Nigeria in the African Cup of Nations, and he will return to Merseyside in the coming days.

With trips to Marseille and Bournemouth looming over the next week, there is no doubt that the return of the team’s talisman could be a positive for Liverpool.
