Arsenal had strikers Victor Gyokeris, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus all unavailable but Arteta was able to call up Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli from the bench.
Arsenal have suffered injuries to a number of their strikers, but with captain Martin Odegaard returning tonight and Gyokeris and Havertz improving, Arteta’s options look as if they will improve.
After bringing in eight players in the summer, Arteta has been able to overcome the issues he has faced – Madueke scored his first goal for the club against Bayern, while Martinelli scored his fourth goal in as many Champions League appearances.
“I couldn’t have chosen a better match to score my first goal for Arsenal,” Madueke said. “I’m very happy that the team got the win as well.”
“It’s an unbelievable statement, but we know the work we’ve put in. We go into this game with confidence that we will win.
“I’m a confident player. I don’t like for anyone to tell me that I can’t do something. But my teammates and the coaching staff trust me.”
Former defender Upson believes the options available to Arsenal are a big reason why Arteta is able to maintain very high standards.
“Arsenal’s alternative delivers an outstanding performance in all aspects, in terms of freshness and quality.” Upson said.
“We’re talking about multiple players coming in and making an impact. They’re all looking for a starting position.
“I think that’s the key. It’s not easy for a coach to keep a team this deep, hungry, together and fighting for the shirt, but also to respond in the right way when they’re not in the team.
“In the end, Mikel Arteta has all his players pulling in the same direction. The goal is to win the Premier League title and get as far as possible in the Champions League.
