In a statement,, external Arsenal said the club and the Rwanda Development Board had “mutually agreed” to finalize the deal.
Arsenal added that this partnership “went beyond the original objectives of the partnership”, which were to promote sustainable tourism and environmental conservation, while supporting Rwanda’s ambition “to become an international sporting hub in Africa”.
Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick said the partnership played an important role in helping the Gunners “invest in our long-term vision of winning major trophies, in a financially sustainable way”.
In February, the Democratic Republic of Congo appealed to Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, who are also sponsored by Visit Rwanda, to end their “bloodstained” deals amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in the country.
A group called “Gunners for Peace” protested outside the Emirates Stadium during the first leg of the Champions League semi-final with Paris Saint-Germain last season, with a banner reading “Drop Visit Rwanda,” and distributed badges to cover the “Visit Rwanda” slogan on the kits.
The group also filmed a satirical video urging fans to “visit Tottenham”, Arsenal’s north London rival, instead, to highlight the need for a sponsor that “better fits the club’s values”.
Artillery for Peace posted on Instagram, external News of the deal’s completion showed Arsenal “still have the level and values to do the right thing”, adding: “We all know money talks, but if the fans come together and speak louder, they should listen.”
