Kyrgios has long been a polarizing figure in the sport, given his checkered history on and off the field.

The Australian has received numerous penalties over the course of his career for inappropriate behavior and fiery outbursts.

There were also allegations of domestic violence and accusations of sexual comments.

Kyrgios pleaded guilty to assaulting his ex-girlfriend in 2023, then was forced to distance himself from controversial influencer Andrew Tate in 2024.

His recent comments about playing Sabalenka – in which he vehemently questioned in one podcast whether he would have to “try 100%” to win – have led to fears that the event will fuel misogyny.

In a press release announcing the event, Kyrgios’ tone was noticeably different.

“When the world number one challenges you, you answer the call. I have great respect for Arina; she is a powerhouse and a true champion,” he said.

Sabalenka does not seem to think the match will have any negative impact on the perception of women’s sports, as she simply said at the US Open that she thought it was a “great idea.”

Tennis Podcast co-host Catherine Whittaker thinks otherwise.

She told BBC Sport: “I don’t see any benefit at all from women’s tennis. I see nothing but dejection.”

“It’s a crass business venture and a vehicle for one of the most outspoken misogynists in tennis who just wants attention.

“If Sabalenka wins, she’s beating an unfit man who has been completely irrelevant for a number of years. What will she win? Nothing. Unless she wins 6-0, 6-0, people will have nothing but ammunition to shoot at women’s tennis.”

“If Kyrgios wins, he and others like-minded will claim that it legitimizes everything he already says. It is disgusting to give him a platform.

“I find it absolutely ridiculous that this could happen in 2025.”
